Understanding Caustic Soda (NaOH): Grades, Applications & Export Standards

What is Caustic Soda?

Caustic Soda, chemically known as Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), is a strong inorganic alkali used across a wide spectrum of industries. India is one of the leading exporters of caustic soda globally, serving markets in the GCC, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.

Grades Available

Technical Grade (99%+): Used in textile processing, paper manufacturing, soap making and chemical synthesis. This is the most commonly exported grade from Indian manufacturers.

Food Grade (E524): Complies with food safety standards and is used in food processing — particularly for curing olives, pretzels and as a pH regulator in beverages.

Membrane Cell Grade: Highest purity produced via membrane cell electrolysis technology. Used in pharmaceutical manufacturing and sensitive chemical processes.

Key Applications

  • Textile & Fabric Processing: Mercerisation of cotton
  • Paper & Pulp: Kraft pulping process
  • Soap & Detergent Manufacturing: Saponification
  • Water Treatment: pH adjustment and coagulation
  • Aluminium Industry: Bayer process for alumina extraction

Export Documentation Required

When exporting caustic soda, buyers typically require: Certificate of Analysis (COA), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Packing List, and SGS/BV pre-shipment inspection report. Trident Chemicals provides all documentation as standard.
